MateVFR — Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 21, 2026
MateVFR ("the app") is a VFR moving-map, flight-plan and logbook tool for pilots, developed by Martín Alberto Chiervo ("I", "me"). Contact: flyingafter40@gmail.com.
The app is a reference and situational-awareness aid. It is not certified and must not be used as the only means of navigation.
What stays on your phone
Data is stored on your phone first. If you sign in, some of it is also synced to my account (see the next section).
- Your position, heading, speed and the phone's motion sensors are used on the device to draw the map, the PFD and the compass rose. I do not collect them and they are not sent to me.
- Your flight plans, logbook, recorded flights, aircraft profiles, saved settings, the flight-plan form data (including your signature image) and the diagnostics log are stored on the device (the ones that sync when you sign in are listed below). The diagnostics log is only shared if you export it yourself.
What is sent to me (only if you sign in)
Signing in is optional and uses Sign in with Apple. If you sign in, the following is stored on my account at Supabase (a cloud database provider) so it can follow you between devices:
- your account identifier and the name or e-mail Apple shares, if any;
- your pilot callsign and flight points, shown to other pilots on the leaderboard unless you switch that off;
- your aircraft profiles, logbook entries and flight summaries;
- the reference points (visual references and obstacles) you choose to share: name, note, height and position. A shared point is reviewed by me before other pilots can see it.
What is sent to other services
To work, the app asks third-party services for map and weather data. These requests carry the approximate area you are looking at or your position, and your IP address, as with any internet request:
These services have their own privacy policies. I do not receive that information.
- wind forecasts (Open-Meteo) and weather reports (Aviation Weather Center, NOAA);
- map tiles (OpenFreeMap, built on OpenStreetMap), terrain relief (Esri), and, only if you turn them on, satellite imagery (Esri or Google Maps);
- live air traffic (adsb.fi);
- NOTAM look-ups (FAA) for the aerodromes you open, and, only if you turn on the US VFR chart, the FAA's chart tiles (served from ArcGIS Online);
- when you open the Google satellite viewer, the Google Maps SDK, which Google operates under its own terms and privacy policy;
- downloads of aeronautical data (GitHub).
What I do not do
I do not sell your data, I do not use advertising or tracking, and I do not build profiles. I run no analytics of my own. If you open the optional Google satellite viewer, Google's Maps SDK may collect a device identifier and crash, performance and usage data under Google's own privacy policy.
Donations
Voluntary donations are made through Apple's in-app purchase. Apple processes the payment; I receive no payment details. Donating unlocks nothing.
Your choices and your data
- You can use almost everything without signing in.
- You can delete your account and the data synced to it from the app (Menu → About and legal → Delete account), or by writing to flyingafter40@gmail.com. Data saved only on your phone is not touched by this: you delete it separately in the app or by deleting the app.
- You can stop sharing a reference point or delete it at any time; deleting it removes it for everyone.
- Location and motion permissions can be changed in iOS Settings.
How long I keep your data
- On your phone: until you delete it in the app or delete the app.
- On my account (only if you sign in): for as long as the account exists. I do not delete accounts for inactivity. A shared reference point stays until you delete it or stop sharing it.
- When you delete your account (Menu → About and legal → Delete account): your profile, callsign and leaderboard points, aircraft, logbook, flight summaries and shared points are erased from the live database right away.
- Backups: I do not keep my own backups of the database, and my hosting provider (Supabase) shows no backups for this project. If that changes, deleted data could remain in a backup only until it expires, and I will update this policy.
- Other services keep the requests they receive according to their own policies.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes I will update this page and the date above.
